Montessori Practical Life Holiday Cookies Baking Recipe

The holidays are right around the corner, and we want to share a fun activity that you can do with your little one that embraces Montessori at home! This Practical Life activity helps them use fine motor skills and work on a hands-on activity that gets everyone in the holiday spirit!

Ingredients

      • 1/2 cups of butter (softened)
      • 2 cups of agave nectar or honey
      • 4 eggs
      • 2 tsp vanilla extract
      • 5 and 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
      • 2 tsp baking powder
      • 1 tsp salt

Materials

      • Flat baking tray
      • Baking paper
      • Cookie cutters

Prepare the Dough

  • Allow your child to measure out the ingredients for the dough, as this helps them be independent learners. Show them the difference between the measuring cups vs. the measuring spoons and why that matters when baking.
  • Have your child cut the butter with a rounded knife and then mix it in until there are no more lumps. They can beat the butter and watch how the batter starts to change.
  • Next, measure and mix in the vanilla, nectar, and eggs. Allow them to gradually combine the dry ingredients while beating with the mixer.
  • Stir everything together and explain that everything in this mix was crafted perfectly to get the right combination for the cookies!

Once the mixture is combined, cover and chill the dough for two hours.

Roll out the Dough

  • Place flour on the counter and have your child roll out the chilled dough. Roll the dough until it is about a 1/2 inch thick. Explain how the flour helps the dough not stick to the counter.
  • Bring out the holiday cookie cutters and have your child make different holiday-shaped cookies. Once each piece of dough has been cut out, place the dough on the cookie tray, lined with baking paper. Help them experiment with the different shapes and textures of each cookie!
Place the tray in the oven and let bake for 7 minutes at 350 degrees.

Decorating

  • This is a great opportunity for your child to use their imagination and create fun cookies!

Cleaning Up

  • This Practical Life activity of cleaning up will help your child foster good habits. Items to clean could be washing the dishes, wiping down the counters, or even sweeping the floor if a mess was made.

We can’t wait to see your holiday cookies! Share your creations with us on social media, and please be sure to tag us!
