Summer Program 2022 Recap

This year, our CMMS Summer Program offered a variety of themed weeks, enrichment programs, and field trips for CMMS students–and they had a blast making unforgettable memories!

Each themed week was packed with educational activities and of course fun! The colors red, white, and blue were in full-swing during Week 1: America the Beautiful. CMMS children gathered to show their American pride through their own 4th of July parade, American flag arts & crafts, and expressed gratitude while celebrating their freedom.

Students then dove into Week 2: Under the Sea to explore marine environments through ocean-themed activities, experiences, and crafts. A field trip to the aquarium where small and large aquatic animals swam–kept them on their toes and eager for the next marine-life display.

Picking up a paintbrush or in some cases using their fingers, CMMS children created masterpieces! Their great ideas and creations were brought to life using practical life, gross motor development, and sensory skills. Week 3: Artscape full of expressive art closed out with our Rockville campus taking a field trip to The Annette and Theodore Lerner Family Theater and our Owings Mills campus having their own Art Exhibit!

Week 4: To infinity and beyond blasted students off into space to learn about planets and galaxies! Math, science, and artistic skills were used to grasp the vast expansiveness of outer space. A parent volunteer employed at NASA led storytime from space for our children at our Elkridge, Germantown, and Rockville campuses.

Halfway through the Summer, CMMS students learned how the rhythmic nature of music can be used to tell a story, evoke a certain emotion, or simply celebrate a happy event during Week 5: Music Moves Us. Circle time was filled with musical instruments and sing-alongs, with musical guest speaker Arianna Ross, visiting several campuses including Ellicott City. Arianna develops engaging educational programs that combine the power of music, dance, theater, creative writing, and story-telling.

STEM programs and activities engaged students’ imaginations and motivated them to create workable solutions to real-world everyday problems for Week 6: STEMsational! Goggles and lab coats were necessary as CMMS students at our Owings Mills campus used microscopes and test tubes to participate in a challenging science experiment. A fantastic science show presented by The Mad Science outreach program was full of engaging science experiments for students at our Columbia campus–they were amazed!

Week 7: Traveling Through Time engaged students to explore the world and historical experiences such as the Mesozoic Era, Ancient Greece, Middle Ages, Ancient Egypt, and Colonial America! The #CMMSStemChallenges came in handy as students were prompted to create an Egyptian Sugar Cube Pyramid using yellow food coloring. Children at our Baltimore campus brought in photos of themselves to make a timeline to see how they have traveled through time!

Week 8: Journey Around the World kept CMMS children on the go–learning about the history, geography, and cultures of different countries. From stamping passports, to learning about each continent, and a visit from Fangs, Frogs, and More located in Carney, Maryland–our students became world travelers!

Summer came to an end but CMMS students are still moving! In the final Week 9: Fun and Fitness, students developed coordination skills and learned the importance of good physical health and strong team/good sportsmanship.  At our Bel Air & Forest Hill locations, an obstacle course provided by Let’s Get Bouncy got our students up and bouncing around with cheerful smiles.

This Summer truly was enjoyable for the CMMS community and we can’t wait to see what next Summer brings! We hope to see you next year for our Summer Program 2023!
