STEM Challenge: Rain Cloud in a Jar

Get ready for the next #CMMSSTEMChallenge for our Summer Program 2022! This week’s theme is STEMsational. Programs and activities will engage students’ imaginations and motivate them to create workable solutions to real-world everyday problems.

Ever wonder how it rains? Make your own fluffy rain cloud in a jar to learn about the water cycle!

Share your creations on social media using #CMMSSTEMChallenge or by emailing marketing@childrensmanor.com.

Materials:
        • Food coloring (Tip: Use blue if possible, it will create a rain droplet effect)
        • Water
        • A clear jar or glass
        • Shaving cream (or whip cream)
        • Plastic pipettes (or plastic straws)

Instructions:
        1. Mix a few droplets of food coloring into a cup of water and set it aside, this is our “rain”.
        2. Fill the clear jar or glass about ¾ full of cool water.
        3. Create a fluffy “cloud” of either shaving cream or whip cream on top of the jar or glass of water.
        4. Use the pipette or plastic straw to absorb some of the colored water that was set aside and gently release it on top of the fluffy cloud. Keep going until the cloud grows larger.
        5. Watch the colored droplets of rain make their way through the cloud and drop into the water underneath! Think about how the colored droplets were able to drop down into the water. Try new colored droplets of rain with a different food coloring for more fun!

We can’t wait to see your creativity! Share your creations on social media using #CMMSSTEMChallenge or by emailing marketing@childrensmanor.com.
